Australian No.2 Marinko Matosevic has been nominated at the upcoming 2012 Victorian Sport Awards, to be held at Victoria’s home of sport, the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Matosevic, along with paralympians Ellie Cole and Kelly Cartwright, Orica GreenEDGE cyclist Simon Gerran, twice London Olympic rowing medallist Kim Crow, and Melbourne Vixen and Australian Diamond netballer Madison Brown, are vying for the prestigious honour of being named Victorian Athlete of the Year.
The naming of the Victorian Athlete of the Year (male and female) will be the highlight of the evening’s honours, which also includes the presentation of several other award categories and the coming together of Victoria’s best athletes, coaches, officials and administrators to celebrate the year’s sporting achievements both on and off the field, recognising success within Australia and on the world stage.
Matosevic is being recognised for a career-best season in 2012, during which he rose from outside the world’s top 200 to crack the top 50 – briefly becoming Australia’s top-ranked male – as well as reaching his first ATP final in Delray Beach and winning his first live Davis Cup rubber.
The winners at the Victorian Sports Awards will stamp their name on the honour role alongside renowned sportsmen and women including Cathy Freeman, Leisel Jones, Sharelle McMahon, Lydia Lassila, Andrew Gaze, Steve Moneghetti, James Tomkins, Jim Stynes and Cadel Evans.
