Marinko Matosevic has lost in the opening round of the BB&T Atlanta Open on Monday, going down in three sets to Ryan Harrison.
The American 21-year-old beat Matosevic 6-2 2-6 6-3 in one hour and 43 minutes, winning almost 90 per cent of his first serve points to secure victory.
The win sets up a second round match against No.4 seed Igor Sijsling.
Meanwhile, Matosevic’s compatriot Matthew Ebden cemented his place in the main draw at the ATP 250 event with a straight-set win over fellow Australian Chris Guccione.
Ebden, the top seed in qualifying, defeated the big-serving left-hander 6-4 7-6(2), and will face Ivo Karlovic in the first round, the Croatian who last week won the ATP Claro Open Colombia.
Ebden joins Lleyton Hewitt as another Australian in the tournament, the first of the Emirates US Open Series.
At the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Aussie Sacha Jones went down in the final round of qualifying to Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia.
