A strong squad of Australian junior boys and girls will this week take on the world’s best in the World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic.
The 14-and-under ITF competition features the top 16 boys’ and girls’ teams from countries all over the world battling in a round-robin format; Australia is the top seed in the boys’ event and the third seed in the girls’ competition.
Australia’s boys’ team is represented by Alexei Popyrin, Alex De Minaur and Kody Pearson, the same combination which went undefeated in the Asia/Oceania qualifying event in Malaysia in April.
The team, captained by Ben Pyne, heads Group A and will take on Brazil, Czech Republic and Italy in the round-robin stage of the competition.
Our girls’ squad comprises Destanee Aiava, Seone Mendez and Jaimee Fourlis and captain Simon Youl, an unchanged line-up from the team that topped the Malaysian qualifying event.
The third seeds head Group B, with round-robin opposition coming in the form of the United States, Great Britain and Italy.
Play starts on Monday 5 August in Prostejov.
