Australia’s Matt Ebden has bowed out of the US National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis after a straight sets loss to Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.

Ebden, currently ranked 62nd, fell 7-5 6-4 to the 34-year-old Karlovic, failing to score a break point and watching as 14 aces whistled past.

Meanwhile, Cypriot wildcard Marcos Baghdatis booked a second-round date with Lleyton Hewitt at the ATP 250 event.

Baghdatis, who reached the Australian Open final in 2006, beat US qualifier Rajeev Ram 6-3 6-4 and will now meet the Australian third seed Hewitt.

Ranked 134th in the world, Baghdatis has not won two matches in a row since last year’s US Open, when he lost in the third round to Stanislas Wawrinka.

Since then, Baghdatis has lost eight of his past 10 matches but against Ram he was lethal, firing 10 aces and dispatching his opponent in just 75 minutes.
