Sam Stosur’s disappointing Middle Eastern swing has continued, with the Australian bowing out in the opening round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
After cruising through the opening set, Stosur fell 1-6 6-1 6-4 to qualifier Annika Beck of Germany in just shy of two hours.
It was the 20-year-old’s second top 20 win in as many days; she ousted world No.19 Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in the final round of qualifying at the $2 million WTA Premier event.
Beck next goes on to face eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki, a three-set winner over Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.
Stosur, meanwhile, remains alive in the doubles event; teaming with Italy’s Flavia Pennetta, the pair will face third seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik in the first round on Wednesday.
