Australia’s Bernard Tomic has crashed out of the first round of the Nice Cote d’Azur, going down 4-6 6-3 6-4 to Slovakia’s Martin Klizan.
Tomic looked good in the first set, but the Slovakian bounced back to take control of the match.
Klizan will now face second seed Ernests Gulbis in the second round.
In other matches on Tuesday, American qualifier Jack Sock set up a second-round clash with top seed John Isner after seeing off Kenny De Schepper in straight sets.
The 21-year-old takes on his compatriot, who received a first-round bye, in the last 16 following a 6-4 6-2 victory over his French opponent.
Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq held on for a 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory over Julien Benneteau of France, while Holland’s Robin Haase claimed a 6-3 6-2 win against Italian Filippo Volandri in just over an hour to set up a clash with fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov.
Also on Tuesday, 20-year-old Austrian Dominic Thiem defeated his American opponent Steve Johnson 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-5 to set up a tie against fourth seed Gilles Simon in the last 16.
