Thanasi Kokkinakis found 12th seed Richard Gasquet too strong in the second round of the ATP/WTA Cincinnati Masters on Wednesday.
The young Aussie went down 7-6(5) 6-2 to the Frenchman, who will play Marin Cilic in the third round.
Kokkinakis did well to save three match points in the final game, the first with a scorching backhand winner down the line.
But his unforced errors – his final tally of 36 was double that of Gasquet’s – ended up hurting him.
Joining Kokkinakis on the sidelines was Daria Gavrilova, who went down to Italian Karin Knapp 6-4 6-1.
In the previous round, Gavrilova had upset 16th seed and last week’s Toronto semifinalist Sara Errani.
There are no more Australians remaining in the men’s or women’s draw in Cincinnati.
