German journeyman Benjamin Becker has ended Australian John Millman’s campaign at the ATP Memphis Open on Thursday with a 6-2 7-6(6) victory.
Millman, who was seeded seventh for the tournament dropped the opening set in quick time before going up an early break in the second.
Becker eventually broke back and forced the second to a tie-break, racing out to a 5-2 lead before Millman rallied.
Millman had a set point at 6-5 but was unable to force a deciding set.
The German world no.107 reeled off three straight points to win the match and advance to the quarterfinals.
Millman reached the quarterfinals last week in Montpellier before losing 7-6(5) 5-7 6-3 to another tour veteran in Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.
Becker will next face either No.2 seed Steven Johnson or his 18-year-old American compatriot Taylor Fritz.
