Sam Groth has fallen in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
The Australian on Thursday lost to Argentine Leonardo Mayer 6-4 6-3; Mayer goes on to face No.20 seed Viktor Troicki.
Groth’s five aces were offset by four double faults during the 81-minute match.
The loss is his ninth in 10 matches so far in 2o16.
Queenslander John Millman will play his first round match on Friday against American qualifier Alexander Sarkissian.
Fellow Aussies Bernard Tomic, Nick Kyrgios, Sam Stosur and Daria Gavrilova are all seeded and as a result have received first-round byes.
