Top seed Bernard Tomic has exited the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest, beaten in his opening match by Robin Haase.
Tomic went down 7-6(4) 5-7 6-3 to the Dutchman, who at 64th is ranked 43 spots lower than the Australian.
The Queenslander, who was granted a wildcard entry into the tournament, was returning to competition after a wrist injury forced him to retire from his match against Milos Raonic at last month’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Tomic has now lost 11 of his last 14 claycourt matches dating back to 2014.
