Australian Lizette Cabrera has fallen short of her first WTA semifinal berth after losing 6-1 7-6(4) to Evgeniya Rodina at the Guangzhou Open in China.
Cabrera, ranked 153rd in the world, struggled on serve throughout the hour and 44 minute quarterfinal, conceding three breaks to her Russian opponent in the opening set.
The 19-year-old was broken four times in the second but also took four break points of her own before losing the tiebreaker 7-4.
It was the first time she has reached the quarterfinals of a WTA event, beating third-seeded Estonia Anett Kontaveit in straight-sets the previous day to do so.
Rodina will face Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova in the final four, while Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer defeated sixth seed Alize Cornet to reach the semifinals.
Wickmayer beat Cornet 6-1 7-6(5) and will next face Aleksandra Kunic of Serbia.
