Bernard Tomic has scored his first singles win since June with a three-set victory over Joao Sousa of Portugal in Tokyo.

Tomic had lost his last four matches but rebounded for a 6-3 3-6 6-3 win in the first round of the Rakuten Japan Open, sealing the result in one hour and 46 minutes.

He will go on to face the winner of the match between eighth seed Diego Schwartzman and American Donald Young.

Another Aussie, Matt Ebden, will play his first-round match against Ivo Karlovic later on Monday in Tokyo.
