Aussie boys’ finish second at World Junior Tennis qualifying

Australia’s top 14-and-under boys have finished second in the 2019 ITF World Junior Tennis Asia / Oceania qualifying event after a strong week in Kuala Lumpur.
Australian juniors Zach Viiala (WA), Jeremy Zhang (NSW) and Alex Despoja (SA) and coach Damian Ward were competing for a place in the international finals to be held later this year. The boys’ had a stellar week, overcoming Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Korea, India and China on the way to the final where they faced a ruthless Japan who prevailed in three close matches to finish second.
The silver medal finish means the Aussue boys have qualified for the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals to be held in Projestov, Czech Republic in August this year.
The girls’ team, made up of Hana Sonton (Qld), Taylah Preston (WA) and Jessie Culley (WA) start competition today, 8-13 April led by National Academy coach Steve Blundell.
Junior Davis Cup Asia / Oceania qualifying also gets underway in New Delhi today.
