Astra Sharma has stormed into her first WTA quarterfinal with a straight-sets win over Poland’s Magda Linette in Bogota.

Sharma beat the eighth seed 6-4 6-3 in a brisk 73 minutes to take her place in the last eight at the clay-court event, where she will face either former world No.5 Sara Errani or Dutch qualifier Bibiane Schoofs.

The win over the 85th-ranked Linette is expected to push Sharma up to a new career-high ranking of No.120.

Making her progression all the more remarkable is the fact this is just the sixth tour-level event of her career.

In 2019, Sharma has won 13 of her 17 matches and shaved almost 100 spots off her ranking; she’s currently the world No.138, having begun the year at No.231.

She also remains alive in the doubles event with fellow Aussie Zoe Hives.

In the semifinals, Sharma and Hives will meet another all-Aussie duo in fourth seeds Monique Adamczak and Jess Moore.

Adamczak and Moore, who reached last week’s WTA final in Monterrey, beat Ana Bogdan and Sachia Vickery 6-1 7-5 to advance.
