Alex Bolt lost his delayed first-round match at Roland Garros to leave three players carrying Australian hopes in French Open qualifying.
Bolt, seeded 18th, went down 6-2 6-2 to Spain’s Adrian Menendez-Maceiras, ranked 19 places below the Aussie at 150 in the world.
The Spaniard took an early lead in both sets and broke serve five times, to just one from Bolt, over the course of one hour and 14 minutes.
Bolt’s defeat leaves Jason Kubler as the only Australian man remaining in the qualifying draw and he takes on Serbian veteran Viktor Troicki in the second round on Wednesday.
Aussie women Kim Birrell and Aria Rodionova will get their campaigns under way in the first round against Greece’s Valentini Grammatikopoulou and Switzerland’s Conny Perrin respectively.
There was disappointment for John Millman in Lyon as his French Open preparations ended in the last 16 with a 7-6(3) 7-5 defeat by Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.
