Tennis NSW is saddened by the passing of former Australian international, Beryl (Penrose) Collier.
Collier is a Tennis NSW Life Member and a member of the Illawarra Hardcourt Tennis Association.
Her tennis career included victory at the Australian Open in 1955. As well as recording a straight sets victory over compatriot Thelma (Coyne) Long, Collier also won the women’s doubles title with Mary (Bevis) Hawton and the mixed doubles with Neale Fraser.
Offshore, Collier won the German Championships and reached the French Open and Wimbledon quarterfinals in the same year. The results catapulted her to a career-high ranking of world No.5.
In 2017, Collier’s achievements in tennis were recognised with her induction into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame.
Her grandson, James Duckworth continues the family’s tennis tradition and is currently ranked world No.88.
Tennis NSW sends its condolences to Beryl’s family.
