27 June 2021 | Tennis NSW

The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve and due to the risk associated with an increasing number of venues where transmission has occurred, the strict stay-at-home order for residents and workers from the Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and City of Sydney council areas has been extended to ALL of Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, the Central Coast and Wollongong.

The current NSW Public Health Orders provide that from 6.00pm Saturday, June 26 2021, until 11.59pm, Friday, July 9 2021, people will only be able to leave home for one of the following four reasons:

  • Shopping for food or other essential goods and services
  • Medical care or compassionate needs
  • Exercise outdoors in groups of 10 or fewer
  • Essential work, or education, where you cannot work or study from home

Tennis NSW continues to take the position that recreational tennis is considered exercise and can continue, provided your venue has, and complies with, an up-to-date COVID-19 Safety Plan. However, in line with current public information from the NSW Government, and the Office of Sport, community sport will not be permitted during this period.

Prior to organising any formalised delivery of tennis programming outside of public court hire (coaching, clinics, camps, cardio tennis), it is recommended that any venue/operator seeks approval from their relevant landowner or local council in regards to COVID-related conditions that may also apply.  Tennis NSW encourages its coaching delivery network to comply with any conditions that are imposed by their landowner or local council. Unless numbers can be managed safely and in full compliance with the Orders both indoors and outdoors, then camps cannot be run.

As per the current Public Health Order, Tennis NSW understands that coaching can occur subject to all other restrictions (such as the limit of 10 people per court excluding any staff or coach delivering the program).

We ask our members to refer to the current Public Health Orders and look to carry out strict COVID protocols at your venues including but not limited to ensuring all players check-in via the Services NSW QR code, masks are worn as required and observing social distancing. We remind our members that the current NSW Public Health Order requires that masks must be worn indoors and all indoor space must observe the 1 person per 4 square metre rule (NSW COVID-19 rules).

As per communication on 26 June, Tennis NSW will be cancelling all Australian Ranking Tournaments scheduled for the duration of the lockdown. These include:

2021 Priceline Country Championships
3-6 July Newcastle AMT
3-6 July Gosford AMT
3-6 July Tennis Macarthur JT
7-10 July Wollongong JT

Tennis NSW has also postponed all Badge matches until further notice.

Please note the above advice is current as at 6.00pm Saturday 26 June, and is subject to revision upon further advice from the Office of Sport. Tennis NSW will continue to monitor the current government guidelines and Public Health Orders and keep its community across any changes. Please remember that the final assessment of whether a tennis club or venue can operate safely within the current Government guidelines does not rest with Tennis NSW – we can only provide a set of recommendations and guidelines to operate within based on the most recent advice from our Federal or Statement Governments.

Thank you for your cooperation and stay safe.
