The NSW Open is now complete!
What a week we have had here in Sydney. The last time Sydney hosted a Men’s Challenger event was in 2013, where a young Nick Kyrgios defeated Matt Reid in the final. Nine years later we hosted the first ever combined Men’s and Women’s event of this level outside of the Sydney International.
Court 2 was centre stage yesterday for both the Women’s and Men’s Finals. First up we saw the Women’s final go the distance between Mai Hontama of Japan and our very own Aussie, Petra Hule, who used her WC into the Main Draw perfectly to nearly capture the title. Unfortunately for Petra, Mai was too strong and came out victor 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-5 in a very tough 3 set match lasting nearly two and a half hours. Congratulations Mai!
The Men then followed the Women’s match with the bar set high and what a match it was. Aussie, Marc Polmans, did his best to fight off a very strong Yu Hsiou Hsu (TPE) who has had an amazing week this week in Sydney. Unfortunately for Marc, HSU was just too strong taking the match 6-4 7-6(5) in front of nearly 200 people who turned out to watch these finals matches.
Thank you to all spectators who made the trip out to Sydney Olympic Park this week to watch some amazing tennis. It is fantastic to have International tennis of this standard in Sydney again and to be able to offer it as a free event for the public to come and watch. Thank you also goes out to all of the people behind the scenes who made this event possible. To everyone from the staff, Officials, ATP Supervisors, ITF Supervisors, Volunteers and Ballkids who spent the week with us, we would not have been able to provide this event without your assistance so thank you for taking time out of your own schedules to help deliver this great event.
