The first day of the Perpetual NSW Open was filled with intense matches and surprising results as both seasoned players and wildcards took to the court. Below is a summary of the standout performances from the Men’s Qualifying Singles and Men’s Singles rounds.

Men’s Qualifying Singles – Qualifying Round 2

The qualifying rounds were fiercely contested, with players vying for a spot in the main draw.

  • Seita. Watanabe (JPN) faced off against the local wildcard, Cruz Hewitt (AUS). After dropping the first set 3-6, Watanabe made a remarkable comeback, dominating the next two sets 6-0, 6-4 to secure his place in the main draw.
  • Pavle Marinkov (AUS) had a strong showing against the 12th seed, James Watt (NZL). Marinkov maintained control throughout the match, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, demonstrating his skill and composure.
  • The top seed, Aleksandre Bakshi (GEO), faced a challenging match against Joshua Sheehy (USA). After losing the first set 5-7, Bakshi rallied to win the next two sets 7-6(4), 6-3, showcasing his resilience and tactical prowess.

Men’s Singles – Round of 32

The main draw’s Round of 32 saw some unexpected outcomes and impressive victories.

  • Matthew Dellavedova (AUS) delivered a commanding performance against the 7th seed, Shintaro Mochizuki (JPN), winning convincingly with scores of 6-1, 6-2. Dellavedova’s dominance on the court was evident as he secured his place in the next round.
  • Tibo Colson (BEL) faced a tough opponent in Shintaro. Imai (JPN). After splitting the first two sets 6-3, 3-6, Colson found his rhythm in the final set, winning 6-2 and moving forward in the tournament.
  • In another notable match, Hikaru Shiraishi (JPN) defeated wildcard entrant Moerani Bouzige (AUS) with a solid performance, taking the match 6-2, 6-4. Shiraishi’s consistency and strategic play were key to his victory.

 

Women’s Qualifying Singles – Qualifying Round 2

In an exciting round of Women’s Qualifying Singles, the day’s matches showcased resilience and skill as players battled fiercely for a spot in the main draw.

 

  • [14] Onuo Choi (KOR) produced a stunning upset, defeating top seed [1] Monique Barry (NZL) in a thrilling encounter. After dropping the second set, Choi rallied back to clinch the match 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, demonstrating her tenacity and tactical prowess.
  • [3] Alexandra Bozovic (AUS) delivered a commanding performance against [12] Natsuho Arakawa (JPN), winning decisively 6-1, 6-3. Bozovic’s aggressive baseline play and consistent serving set her apart, as she moved smoothly into the next round.
  • Yukina Saigo (JPN) showcased her grit, overcoming [5] Ya Yi Yang (TPE) in a closely contested match that ended 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Saigo’s ability to fight back after losing the second set proved pivotal, securing her a spot in the next stage.
