Nicky Mayer, Northern Region Development Officer will be travelling to four Homelands Communities this week to deliver tennis programs.

As part of the Power and Water Regional Development Program, Mayer will be attending Garrthalala, Gangan, Yilpara and Barrkira and providing the communities with an opportunity to participate and learn the skills of tennis.

Using the MLC Tennis Hot Shots modified equipment, the children learn in a fun environment using smaller courts, nets, racquet’s and low compression balls which are suited to their size and ability. This provides the children with a fun and exciting way to learn the skills of tennis from the very beginning.

Mayer, who is the Head Coach and Manager of Tennis Gove, must rearrange her coaching business to visit these remote communities, where a chartered flight is the only access.

“I think I have found some future Wimbledon stars in Gangan. They don’t have any concrete for a tennis court; instead it’s the dirt road with some inevitable bad bounces and the odd car.”

“It’s great visiting these remote communities; the children really enjoy themselves and look forward to your visit. The children at Garrthalala were waiting at the airstrip with a hand painted welcome sign. It’s incredibly rewarding to provide them with these tennis opportunities.”

With the help of Tennis Australia and Tennis NT, Mayer is able to provide equipment to these communities so they can continue learning and having fun whilst playing tennis!
