Jordan Thompson is the 2013 champion of the Alice Springs Tennis International proudly sponsored by the NT Government after taking out the men’s singles title on Sunday.

Thompson got the early service break to lead Japanese eighth seed Yuichi Ito 3-0 before Ito fought back to level the first set at 4-all.

But that’s as close as Ito got to the 19-year-old Aussie, with Thompson running away with the first set and moving out to a 5-0 lead in the second set before Ito finally got on the board.

The Sydneysider closed out the 6-4 6-1 victory just one game later.

It was great to finally win a title in Australia, for sure it is the highlight of my career so far” Thompson said.

Leading into the final, Thompson had two really tigh three set matches defeating Cairns Tennis International winner Andrew Whittington QLD, Blake Mott NSW, Brendan Moore NSW before out lasting fourth seed Luke Saville SA in an epic semi-final.

Ito wasn’t without big wins either, taking out third seed Adam Feeney NSW in the quarter-finals before defeating fellow countryman Yusuke Watanuki in the following round.

The win is Thompson’s second Futures title in two month after winning in Austria on clay in July, and his first Futures title on home soil.

The Australian Pro Tour – Men will have a week off before travelling to New South Wales for the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis International #1 (5-12 October 2013).
