Picnic Day weekend had Gardens Tennis club hosting their second tournament of the year. This year’s event came with some extra excitement as Coach Nicky Mayer from Gove Peninsula Tennis Club brought a group of seven young players over to Darwin from Nhulunbuy, for a tennis camp and tournament experience. While in Darwin, the group from Gove had special training sessions with Talent Operations Manager Jessica Polack, and got to experience playing on the main show court at Marrara.

All of the kids from Darwin, Palmerston and Gove enjoyed playing against new opponents and made their tennis-loving friends feel welcome on and off the court.

It was a weekend of fantastic tennis with many tight matches – all players were full of competitive spirit. One of the highlights was the Open finals between Hayden LITIS and Andy BHARDWAJ. Tennis fans were treated to fantastic rallies in a very entertaining match. Both players had and saved match-points against them. Deep into the match tie-break Bhardwaj cramped and found himself unable to serve (or walk!) spelling a win for LITIS.

We thank tournament director Ben McLachlan, event sponsor Top End Welding Services, and Gardens Tennis Club committee for a great weekend of community tennis!
