Sunday afternoon at the Darwin International Tennis Centre, Omar JASIKA faced off against Jake DELANEY for the mens singles final match of the Darwin International. JASIKA started the tournament ranked 246th in the world against male tennis players globally, and DELANEY was ranked 501. JASIKA’s finals win was his 17th in a hot streak from the Victorian.
Both JASIKA and DELANEY have had a massive year, both travelling around the world to play in a huge range of events to build their ranking. JASIKA’s top result of the year was his performance to qualify for the Australian Open 2024.
The men had last faced off in the finals of the Cairns International one year ago, which JASIKA won in 3 tough sets.
Just the night before, DELANEY prevailed in an epic semi-final against Alex KLINTCHAROV. After playing KLINTCHAROV for almost 4 hours, DELANEY backed it up with a mens Doubles Finals win partnering with Josh CHARLTON against Matt HULME and James WATT… safe to say that DELANEY is an absolute machine and we were ready to enjoy a great battle in the mens final.
Players were happy to have the NT Ballkid crew supporting the event and Kai from Tennis Palmerston toss the coin!
Straight of the gate, the tone for the night was set. Both players hit incredibly hard and fought for every single point. If the player serving was unable to get into a commanding position with their serve, an entertaining rally would unfold. The day with a typical territory special, hot and a little humid. Players set a record for T-shirt changes even with the roof overhead.
The first set was heading for a tie-break but JASIKA won 7-5. In the second set, DELANEY fought hard and we were prepared for this to be a 3 set match. However, JASIKA got the edge and managed to win the match and take the title, 7-5, 7-5.
As a result of their performance in the final of the Darwin International, JASIKA’s rank has risen to 230, and DELANEY’s has to 482. Both players are entered in the next event of the Professional Tennis Series, the NT International, we could see a rematch on Sunday 22nd September at 4pm.
The main draw of the NT International begins on TUESDAY 17th SEPTEMBER at the Darwin International Tennis Centre at Marrara. Matches start every day at 3pm and entry is free. Mens singles finals will be played on SUNDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER at 4pm.
