From 14th to 18th December, the Northern Territory junior players showcased their talent and resilience at the Queensland Junior Teams Carnival, managed by team leaders Nicky and Andy on the Gold Coast.

The event, held under challenging weather conditions, featured two age groups: the Under-14s and Under-18s teams. We were delighted to have Amber Sharp return from Victoria to represent the NT team, and glad to welcome QLD players Cleo Bates and Blake Foreshew into the Under-14’s and Under 18s respectively.

Under-14s Team
Boys: William Pengelly, Ethan Harker, Roy Vo
Girls: Imogen Hoppo, Alicia Ward, Cleo Bates (Qld)

Under-18s Team
Boys: Lincoln Pratt, Maximillian Lai, Blake Foreshew (Qld)
Girls: Eva Harris, Amber Sharp, Ava Willoughby

TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
The opening day was met with heavy rain, resulting in canceled matches. However, the players demonstrated determination and made the most of the remaining days.

Under-14s:
The team battled hard in the team events, with several close matches. Roy Vo and Alicia Ward stood out for their fighting spirit and perseverance throughout the tournament.
Imogen Hoppo had an impressive run, winning the Girls’ Consolation Singles in the Roy Emerson Championship.
Ethan Harker reached the Boys’ Consolation Singles semifinals with a commendable performance.
William Pengelly showcased remarkable composure against higher-ranked opponents. His high intensity play, coupled with consistent serving, was a key factor in his strong performances throughout the event.

Under-18s:
Eva Harris and Amber Sharp advanced to the Singles Championship quarterfinals, showcasing their skill against tough opponents, including the eventual finalists.
Ava Willoughby, despite being unseeded, upset a higher-ranked player before narrowly losing to the 5th seed in two competitive sets.
The NT Under-18s team performed exceptionally well in the team event, remaining undefeated in the pool stage. Despite being undefeated they placed second in their pool, which led them to compete in the 3rd/4th position playoff, where they secured a commendable 3rd place finish.
Lincoln Pratt delivered standout performances in singles, defeating higher-ranked opponents. Additionally, he teamed up with Eva Harris in mixed doubles, where the pair remained undefeated throughout the tournament.
Maximillian Lai also showed great resilience in his singles matches and teamed up with Ava Willoughby securing key victories in mixed doubles.

A Step Forward for NT Tennis
The Northern Territory contingent leaves the Queensland Junior Teams Carnival with their heads held high. The players gained invaluable experience, demonstrated resilience, and showed tremendous growth throughout the event.
This successful campaign is a testament to their hard work and commitment, and the confidence gained here will undoubtedly fuel their future endeavors in the sport.
