School Sport Australia 12 and under Tennis pathway (also known as the Bruce Cup)
Every year, School Sport Education NT “SSENT” run regional, inter-region, and national events to grow the school sport pathway.
The FINAL DEADLINE for nominations to play tennis for your region is closing on Monday 28th April! See below for information about this awesome pathway and get in touch with your regional representative to nominate.
WHO CAN ENTER
NT students born between 1st July 2012 and the 31st of December 2015 who have played tennis within their school or at a club.
AM I GOOD ENOUGH TO ENTER?
If you enjoy playing tennis you should enter. You will make friends and learn more about tennis through the experience. School sports events are for EVERYONE.
COST TO ENTER
It is free to play at a regional level.
For kids that need to travel to attend the inter-regional event (Darwin) and the national event (Victoria) there are costs associated with that. We understand that cost of living pressures can be a deciding factor for families. We encourage fundraising activity to assist with the cost of travel where this applies. Also we hope that players still enter their region-based events regardless of whether they may be planning to travel, as this pathway offers great competitive play experience.
NT REGIONAL EVENTS
These are events run on various dates, or a self-nomination process.
Process for regional team selection:
The method may be self-nomination, but ideally it should be a competitive selection for example a trial event day. This would typically happen at a club within that region, supported by the regional SSENT rep and the local coach.
NT regions and their School Sports contacts:
- Darwin region darwinsport.doe@education.nt.gov.au
- Top End (Palmerston & surrounds) topendsport.doe@education.nt.gov.au
- Big Rivers (Katherine and surrounds) bigriverssport.doe@education.nt.gov.au
- Central (Alice Springs club & surrounds) centralsport.doe@education.nt.gov.au
- East Arnhem region (Gove Peninsula club & surrounds) eastarnhemsport.doe@education.nt.gov.au

NT-WIDE EVENT, the “Inter-regional championships”
This is on from 17 June to 19 June at the Darwin International Tennis Centre, Marrara.
If we do not have enough tennis player nominations from each region we will have a Development Camp format where players are put into mixed teams and play both singles and doubles with skill/ gameplay development. The IDEAL is to have a championship format.
NT TEAM SELECTION FOR THE NATIONAL EVENT:
The NT representative side is selected by:
- Coach (DITC coach Andy Bhardwaj this year) Main selector.
- Team Manager (teacher Mat Ryan) Mat has input, but he is also attending as a regional team official.
- Talent representative (Talent and Coach Manager, Martin Rocca from Tennis NT)
Based on performance at the Inter-regional championships, the team would be selection based on criteria. Noting that NT players who are selected for the Australian Teams Championships (the timing overlaps) will be eligible for selection into the National Event in Victoria.
National event – School Sport Australia 12 & under Tennis Championships (also known as the Bruce Cup)
25 October – 1 November, Ballarat Victoria.
This year tennis will be part of this School Sport Australia Games, a historic year to attend.
In 2024 the NT hosted the national event, read up about it here.
