27 May 2011 | Tennis Queensland

The first 2011 Queensland Talent Development Camp was held at Griffith University Tennis Centre on May 21-23.

The camp saw 29 of Queensland’s leading junior athletes come together to work on improving their game.

19 private coaches attended the camp, and players were treated to presentations from guest speakers including: Gary Stickler: “Developing racquet head speed”, Jonah Oliver: “Sport Psychology sessions for parents and coaches”, Grant Jenkins: “Strength training”; and Graeme Neville (former State Coach of South Australia) “Observations from working with Hewitt & Molik as junior players.”

Queensland’s Coach Development Coordinator Derek Burden, was thrilled with the event’s outcome.

“Talent development camps provide a wonderful opportunity for our state’s leading junior players to come together and work on improving their game,” Burden said.

“The great thing about these camps are involve important tennis stakeholders including junior tennis players [and their parents], and private coaches. Plus, they receive valuable insight into the game we love from various guest speakers.”
