March 29th to April 1st saw a Trainee Coaching Course conducted in Charters Towers by Tennis Australia’s Coach and Talent Development Co-ordinator, Derek Burden. The course was attended by 12 participants, who were from Charters Towers, Townsville, Proserpine, and Innisfail.
This was the first course of this nature to be run in a rural area, and a big thank-you goes to John Single (President / Coach of Charters Towers Tennis Club) for instigating this course, as well as Wayne Fielder from Baseline Tennis, Innisfail for encouraging/accompanying six future tennis coaches from the Far North Region to attend the course.
The aim of the course was to increase the number and the quality of coaches in regional areas, and in turn, increase tennis participation. By running the course locally, it proved much more cost effective than getting all 12 participants to travel to Brisbane to complete the course.
