The NEC Xstrata Wheelchair Championships started on Friday 29th June and finished with finals on Sunday 1st July, and was held in conjunction with the Dellacort North Queensland Open Championships held at Tennis Townsville. On Thursday prior to the start of the championships a High Performance Training Camp was held for the players. The camp was run by Tennis Queensland’s wheelchair coach Andrew Ash, with seven players working and wheeling hard.
The Championships saw players travel from as far away as New Zealand and Adelaide and places in between. The 12 male players played in Open Mens Singles, Open Mens Doubles and Consolation Singles. A Round Robin challenge was also played for the 3 juniors.
The weather was typical North Queensland winter weather with temperatures ranging between 24 -25 degrees during the day and a little cooler at night.
RESULTS Mens’ Singles – Travis Moffat (NZ) defeated Henry De Cure (Adelaide) 6-3, 6-2 Mens Doubles – Travis Moffat (NZ) & Phillip Rowe (NZ) defeated Jake McCarthy (Innisfail) & Keegan- Oh-Chee (Sydney) 6-1, 7-5 Mens Singles Consolation – Steve Fell (Brisbane) defeated Anderson Parker (Sydney) 6-2, 6-4 Boys Junior Singles – Stephan Rochecouste (Sydney) 24 games to 6 Anderson Parker (Sydney) 24 games to 29 Jake McCarthy (Innisfail) 19 games to 32
