In what was a cracking night for tennis, the Asia-Pacific Tennis League Queensland Conference kicked off last night on the Sunshine Coast. With a great crowd in attendance, the Kawana Tennis Club was a buzz of activity, with some of Queensland’s best players serving up some top quality tennis action.
Matt Richards, ATL-Qld Conference Director considered the night to be the start of something big in Queensland tennis.
“The ATL-Qld is set to revolutionise tennis in Queensland. The innovative format and structure of the ATL allows us to showcase top quality tennis in Queensland. The Sunshine Coast is known as one of the most beautiful areas of Queensland, so for us to start the season at the Kawana Tennis Club was fantastic for the conference. We hope to build on this momentum and grow the ATL-Qld in the coming rounds.”
John Millman who is currently ranked 249 in the world, and as recently as Sunday was the winner of the William Loud Bendigo International had a tight schedule having to backup from Sundays win to play for the Tennis Brisbane Chargers. The tight schedule did not seem to effect John’s match with the Chargers player defeating fellow ATP ranked player, Isaac Frost from the Tennis Brisbane Tornadoes.
In what was one of the upsets of the night, world number 698 Rachael Tredoux, representing the Shaw Park Sharks defeated her more highly fancied opponent, world number 350 and number 11 in Australia, Toowoomba Tigers player Isabella Holland. Although the Sharks player won in straight sets 4-2 4-3, the scoreline did not reflect the quality of the match, with both players giving their all to bring home a win for their teams.
In the men’s matches the Shaw Park Sharks defeated the Toowoomba Tigers, the Tennis Brisbane Chargers defeated the Tennis Brisbane Tornadoes and the Beenleigh Blaze defeated the Sunshine Coast Breakers.
On the women’s side the Shaw Park Sharks defeated Toowoomba Tigers, the Tennis Brisbane Tornadoes defeated the Tennis Brisbane Chargers and the Beenleigh Blaze defeated the Sunshine Coast Breakers.
The next stop on the road for the ATL-Qld is in Brisbane this Friday night. Matches will be played at Club Coops, 751 Beams Road, Carseldine. Play will start at 6:30pm with all team matches expected to be completed in approximately 3 hours.
