21 March 2013 | Tennis Queensland

The first round of main draw singles is complete at the 2013 City of Ipswich Tennis International. The shock of the day was provided by 371st ranked qualifier So-Ra Lee (KOR) who ousted Australian top seed and tournament favourite Olivia Rogowska in a 6-4 6-1 victory.  Lee fought hard to secure the first set, and with that confidence, breezed through the second to take the win.

Sally Peers (AUS) had a fantastic first round win to take out fifth seeded Thai player Nudnida Luangnam 6-2 6-2. Peers will now play Sachie Ishizu (JPN) who defeated fellow Japanese player Rika Fujiwara 6-3 6-1. Peers will be joined in the second round today by fellow Australian’s Azra Hadzic and Viktoria Rajicic.

Storm Sanders (AUS) will face Sung-Hee Han (KOR) after her victory against yet another seed, Australian Sacha Jones [3]. Sanders is excited by the opportunity of improving her current ranking of 410. “I certainly have enjoyed my start to 2013. I was fortunate to win the $25,000 event in Launceston and I’m hoping to continue to improve my ranking throughout the year. I haven’t played my next Korean opponent but I’m feeling in good form and really enjoying the conditions here in Ipswich so it should be a good match.”

All of the men’s seeds progressed safely through to the round of 16 in first round action completed yesterday including Queenslanders Ryan Agar [8] and Michael Look [4]. The final remaining Queensland player through outside of the seeds in either mens or women’s draws is Qualifier Brandon Walkin who will have full support of the locals going into his match today against 6th seeded Aussie Colin Ebelthite.

All second round singles matches will be completed today as well as the doubles semi-finals. Play begins at 10am at Ipswich Grammar Tennis Centre, Pearse Drive, Brassall.
