11 April 2013 | Tennis Queensland

The 2013 Brisbane Open Age concluded on Thursday the 11th of April. The 10/U event was held at the Ambiwerra Sports Complex whilst the 8/U, 14/U event and all finals were at the Queensland Tennis Centre. Rain threatened as it did last week during the 12’s and 16’s events but fortunately both age groups were completed as scheduled. This tournament was seen as a great post event to the 14/U National Clay Court Championships held in Ipswich last week.

A total of 140 competitors entered over the three age groups. Tennis Queensland President, Ken Laffey and Head of Tennis, Travis Atkinson were in attendance for the presentation with Atkinson praising the players for the dedication they’ve shown to the sport.

The 14/U Boys Singles went as scripted as the top seed, Alexander Crnokrak from the Gold Coast took out Brisbane’s number three seed Blake Ellis 6-4 6-2. Crnokrak was in stunning form over the three days never dropping a set on route to the title. The same can be said for the 14/U Girls top seed Ammaarah Tim from Brisbane who failed to lose a set in the competition as she defeated the number seven seed from Brisbane Josephine Dooley in the final today 6/1 6/2.

A major upset occurred in the 10/U Boys Singles as number two seed from Brisbane Alex Rice defeated top seed from Gold Coast Jacob Bradshaw 6-2 6-3. In the 10/U Girls Singles, Gold Coast’s Sofya Ivanova defeated Brisbane’s Tia Ferguson by a scoreline of 6-4 6-1. The 8/U event concluded yesterday with Kanika Jayathilake defeating Bailey Kowalczuk 6-4 to take home the title.

The next great event’s on the Tennis Queensland Calendar are the Rod Laver Lead In and Rod Laver QLD Junior Championships which will be held from the 28th of June through till the 6th of July. For more information on these events visit tournaments.tennis.com.au.
