The Plexipave Queensland Open is well and truly underway with record numbers kicking off the tournament on a beautiful weekend in Brisbane.

Players are spread across 3 events in this fully inclusive championship, incorporating the Players with Intellectual Disabilities event, wheelchair event and the Queensland Open singles titles. All up, 233 players have registered to play – the largest number at the event since it’s re-introduction in 2009.

The Queensland Open Intelectual Disability Championship concluded yesterday. After initial concerns about prior rainfall affecting the clay court surface, the sun came out, courts were dry and the event went off without a hitch.

In the men’s singles titles, Calum Puttergill provided an upset defeating seventh seed Kaden Hensel 6-4 6-2, whilst two time champion Robert Smeets won a tough three set battle against New South Wales qualifier Ben Rocavert.

Wildcard Michelle Brycki (NSW) caused the major upset of the day defeating second seed and last weeks runner up Dianne Hollands (NZL) in three tight sets.

The excitement continued into the night with the annual Queensland Open Players Party held at Stokehouse Bar on Sunday night. Players in attendance experienced wonderful Queensland winter weather at the venue overlooking the Brisbane river, enjoying the opportunity to relax and unwind after a gruelling weekend on court.

The singles titles continue today with quarter final action starting at 1:30pm and the twilight semi-finals scheduled for 5:30pm later this afternoon.

Tennis Queensland will be hosting a barbecue for the twilight finals to be played from 5:30pm tomorrow.

Mal Anderson will be along to present the Mal Anderson Perpetual trophy whilst Robert Keogh from Plexipave Australia will also be in attendance

Entry is open to the public and free for all spectators.
