Sam Stosur and Bernard Tomic have shown a return to form to begin their Wimbledon campaigns overnight at The Championships, with each proceeding to the second round.

Stosur blasted her way into the second round at Wimbledon with a dominant win over Slovakian teenager Anna Schmiedlova who entered the main draw as a Lucky Loser after a withdrawal.

Stosur, the 14th seed made an ideal start to her 11th straight Wimbledon campaign, needing little more than an hour to secure a 6-1, 6-3 win.

The 29-year-old is targeting a breakthrough result at the grass-court grand slam, having never made it past the third round.

After the win, she talked of a “clarity” she has yet to feel at the tournament.

“I feel like I know what I’m doing and I’m not panicked about what I’m trying to do out there.”

Meanwhile, Tomic’s win was far from certain as he fought to take the match in five sets. Tomic played his best tennis at the crossroads, facing break points and tie-breakers to win the first two, but emotions and a spout of dizziness looked to turn it all around.

Seeded opponent Sam Querrey  took hold in the third and fourth to ensure it all came down to the wire.

After taking injury time, Tomic found his feet again and rode the momentum out to take the match, using a talent for making something from nothing to win 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3.

Tomic will now face James Blake whilst Stosur has set up a second-round clash with Russian Olga Puchkova.

In the doubles, fellow Queenslander J-P Smith with doubles partner Paul Hanley enjoyed a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over Marx and Mergea and Ash Barty with her partner Casey Dellacqua are also through winning in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.
