26 June 2013 | Tennis Queensland

It was a battle of the champions at the Queensland Tennis Centre last night as two-time defending champ Rob Smeets took on preceding title holder Michael Look and 2009 and 2011 women’s champion Ashling Sumner came up against Thailand’s Katherine Westbury.

Despite the cold, we had a great crowd for the finals including tennis greats Ashley Cooper and Mal Anderson, Plexipave Australia Director, Robert Keogh and Tennis Queensland President Ken Laffey. Smeets reminded the sizable crowd why he is the reigning champ with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over top seed Michael Look. Smeets overturned a 5-2 deficit in the second set to storm home and take out the title for the third time in a row.

Like Smeets, Sumner [7] returned to the tournament hoping to collect a third Plexipave Open title and in order to do so, had to take on a higher seed. She fought hard and showed form throughout the week which eventuated in a well earned 6-3 4-6 6-3 victory over third seed Westbury.

In the mens doubles final Calum Puttergill (QLD) and Steven de Waard (QLD) def Robert Stirling (QLD) and Ryan Simmons (QLD). Whilst in the women’s doubles final Deeon Mladin (NSW) and Chelsea Tetai (QLD) defeated Jaimee Gilbertson (QLD) and Stephanie Yamada (NSW)

In the Queensland Open Wheelchair event Steven Fell defeated Mark Towner in the final whilst Archie Graham (QLD) def Luke Trethowan (VIC) and Kathryn Wilson (QLD) def Rosie Smith (QLD) in the Queensland Open PWID Championships.

Tennis Queensland would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made the tournament possible, from the staff at the Queensland Tennis Centre, to the officials and ball kids. We would also like to thank Plexipave Australia for their continued support of the event.

Thank you to our photographer for the night, Cory Wright. More photos from Cory will be available soon.
