The Xstrata NEC North Queensland Wheelchair Championships were played at Tennis Townsville from Friday, 28th June to Sunday 30th June.
Keegan Oh-Chee (NSW), with a current ranking of 48 in the world, was the number one seed in the tournament. Keegan has recently had success as a member of the men’s wheelchair team representing Australia at the World Team Cup in Turkey. The World Team Cup is the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup. Following Australia’s win in May, the team now returns to the World Group for 2014 and are amongst the top 12 teams in the world.
Seeded second was Henry de Cure (South Australia), who holds a world ranking of 65. Henry has improved markedly over the past twelve months, and this can be attributed mainly from experience gained at a higher level of competition, travelling and playing wheelchair tennis around the world.
On Sunday, 30th June the singles championship play-off was held between Keegan and Henry, with Keegan taking out the championship title 6/2, 6/2.
Keegan and Henry then teamed up to play the Mens Doubles event, defeating Dion Rewiti (Gold Coast) and Phillip Rowe (Gold Coast). The winner of the Mens Singles Consolation event was Steve Fell (Brisbane).
