Australian tennis ace Lleyton Hewitt (SA) today claimed his maiden Brisbane International title with a stunning victory over 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer (SUI), capping a remarkable week of action at Queensland Tennis Centre.
Hewitt clinched the title with a 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory over the top seed, and was presented his first Roy Emerson Trophy by Australian tennis legend Rod Laver.
In other action on the final day of play, Mariusz Fyrstenberg (POL) and Daniel Nestor (CAN) won the men’s doubles final, taking out the title in a third set super tiebreak. The No.2 seeds overcame Juan Sebastian Cabal (COL) and Robert Farah (COL) 7-6(4) 4-6 10-7.
A seventh day of record crowds helped the tournament to surpass 100,000 fans for the first time in history, with 105,730 fans joining the action at Queensland Tennis Centre over the past eight days.
World No.1 Serena Williams (USA) won the women’s singles crown for a second successive year, defeating second seed Victoria Azarenka (BLR) 6-4 7-5. The win marked Williams’ 58th career singles title.
