The Australian boys’ and girls’ teams have been named to compete at the Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup Asia/Oceania final qualifying event in Kuching, Malaysia.

Queensland’s own Oliver Anderson (Yeronga, Qld) will be joined by Max Purcell (Belrose, NSW) and Alex De Minaur (Lidcombe, NSW) to represent Australia at the boys’ qualifying event beginning today, until 3 May 2014.

This will be the first time Purcell and De Minaur will play for Australia in Junior Davis Cup, while Anderson represented the country in last year’s finals when Australia finished third.

Priscilla Hon (Rochedale, Qld), Kimberly Birrell (Hope Island, Qld) and Maddison Inglis (Maida Vale, WA) will feature in Australia’s Junior Fed Cup side at the girls’ qualifying event, taking place from 5 – 10 May 2014.

It will be Hon’s second consecutive year representing Australia in Junior Fed Cup, having played in the team that finished runner-up to Russia in 2013. Fifteen-year-old Birrell will also bring some solid international playing experience to the team, having reached the semifinals at the Australian Open Junior Championships in January.

National Academy Coach NSW Jarrad Bunt will captain the Junior Davis Cup side and Louise Pleming will head up the Junior Fed Cup team. Pleming captained the girls’ team of Sally Peers, Isabella Holland and Olivia Rogowska to victory in 2007.

“The sides for Australia’s Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup teams are strong this year and we hope to maintain our position as one of the top nations in the Asia/Oceania region,” said Mark Edney, Professional Tennis Operations Manager for Tennis Australia.

“Each side has solid international experience playing competition tennis. In particular Anderson and Hon will be able use their finals experience to help motivate each team to work hard and play their best,” continued Edney.

Junior Davis and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas is an international team event for boys and girls aged 16 and under.

Qualifying events are played in Asia/Oceania, Europe, South America, North/Central America and Africa to determine the top sixteen teams. The top four qualifiers from the Asia/Oceania event will go on to compete in the world finals in San Luis Potosi, Mexico from 23 – 28 September 2014.

Spain and Russia are the current Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup champions respectively.
