Bernard Tomic has taken inspiration from compatriot Nick Kyrgios to return to form and claim his second career ATP title over the weekend.
Tomic saw victory over power-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic in the final of the Claro Open Colombia in Bogota.
The Queenslander entered the tournament as a wild card, after his return from injury saw him fall to No.124 in the world this year, but despite his entry as a wild card was all but forgotten as he cruised through quarterfinals against the third seed and played powerful tennis to take the semi final in three sets against eighth seed Victor Estrella Burgos (DOM).
In the final, Tomic withstood 39 aces from his second-seeded, reigning champion opponent to take Sunday’s match 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(4) in two hours and 13 minutes.
Amazingly, the performance in Bogota marked the first time that Tomic had won consecutive matches since undergoing double hip surgery in late January.
“It’s my first tournament on hard courts since my surgeries in Australia. This title is huge and it’s one I will always remember.” said Tomic post match.
The win is set to shoot the 21-year-old back into the top 100 on the world rankings – possibly as high as No.70, but not in time to qualify directly for the US Open, as the cut-off date passed last weekend.
Tomic is the second Australian to beat Karlovic in an ATP final this past week, with veteran Lleyton Hewitt toppling him in Newport.
