Six Queenslanders are off to Melbourne to compete in the wildcard play-offs after winning Queensland’s Win a Wild Card events during October.
Gavin van Peperzeel and Ashling Sumner were the first pair to advance to Melbourne after winning the A Grade finals at the Queensland Tennis Centre tournament (12 October).
UQ Sport Tennis Centre hosted the state’s second event (19 October) running both A and B Grade events. Helen Parsons and Pat Flynn fought back from an earlier defeat against Rachael Tredoux and Scott Puodziunas with a 4-2 win in the A Grade final.
In the B Grade Ashley Wilkinson and Colin Prince remained undefeated with a win against Tennis Queensland staff members David Campbell and Elia Hill in the grand final (4-1).
The winners of each event get a trip to Melbourne to play off against the winners of the other Win-a-Wildcard tournaments played around Australia with the final of the B Grade and C Grade events to be played at Melbourne Park during the Australian Open. The winners of the A Grade event will receive a wildcard entry into the Mixed Doubles at the 2015 Australian Open Championships along with all the player perks and $5,000 to the their nominated club.
