Morningside Tennis Centre (Queensland Community Lawn Tennis Association) has been named 2014 Club of the Year at the Queensland Tennis Awards in Brisbane.
The club has undergone a number of changes in recent years including a major overhaul to its facilities and program offerings. Membership is booming and the centre is now a bustling and thriving tennis hub servicing Brisbane’s eastern suburbs. The centre also went on to win Most Outstanding Club at the Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards.
The night also acknowledged the achievements of our top players with The Ashley Cooper Medal for Athlete of the Year going to Samantha Stosur. Stosur competed in 25 tournaments over the year including two Fed Cup meets against Germany and Russia. She also won the Japan Women’s Open for the third time without dropping a set throughout the entire tournament.
Sixteen year-old Kimberly Birrell (pictured) won the Wendy Turnbull Medal for Junior Athlete of the Year after a tremendous year on court. Birrell has an ITF ranking of 20 and a WTA ranking of 972 which peaked this year at 18 and 779 respectively.
