Two out of two Queenslanders and a total of six Australians have blasted through round one of the French Open at Roland Garros this week.
In an outstanding start for local fans, Bernard Tomic and Sam Stosur showed why they remain Australia’s top ranked players and seeded at this week’s Grand Slam. Sam continued her winning streak off the back of her seventh WTA title in Strasbourg, by defeating America’s Madison Brengle comfortably 6-1 6-3. She will next face French wildcard Amandine Hesse and attempt to avenge fellow Aussie Jarmila Gajdosova’s round one defeat.
Bernard had to show a different form of strength in his first win of the tournament. Still recovering from a virus that saw him withdraw from the Nice Open last week, he had to fight through four sets before finally overcoming Italian qualifier Luca Vanni 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4 on Monday. We wish him a speedy full recovery before taking on compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis in round two.
Another local favourite to watch over the coming days is ‘adopted Aussie’ Ajla Tomljanovic. Ajla has become fond of her new home in Brisbane, and we in turn are loving watching this impressive young star rise through the ranks. As the first Australian through in round one, she set a high standard on the clay and will need to continue strong to upset 11th seed Angelique Kerber in her next round.
