The WTA Internationaux de Strasbourg was the perfect confidence boost for Queenslander Sam Stosur in her lead up to Roland Garros.
After a roller-coaster year, the 31 year old made a last-minute decision to enter Strasbourg with a Wildcard, and the move paid off. The third-seeded Stosur faced competition including “Aussie” Ajla Tomljanovic and American Sloane Stephens in her road to the final, winning in three sets on both occasions. She then had to recover from a set down to beat finalist Kristina Mladenovic 3-6 6-2 6-3 in order to claim her first WTA title since last October, and the seventh of her career.
“I couldn’t be happier with going there…I don’t win titles every week so when they happen you have to enjoy them. I have now played a good amount of matches and feel my game is in a good place so we’ll see how things go, but I’ve done what I can to be prepared and now it’s a matter of playing well each time I’m on the court.”
Stosur’s last premier level title came in the lead up to making a French Open final in 2010, which hints that Sam may well be back to her best clay court form just in time for Roland Garros.
