Quad world No.1 Dylan Alcott (AUS) has romped to a 6-0 6-0 win over Antony Cotterill (GBR) in just 38 minutes on a big day of wheelchair action at Queensland Tennis Centre on Saturday.
In 2015 the duo teamed up to win the Queensland Wheelchair Tennis Open quad doubles title, but found themselves on opposite sides of the net in singles action this weekend.
With his Australian Open title defence set to commence later this month, Alcott has stepped up preparations for the 2016 season.
“It’s a great start to the year,” Alcott said.
“I’ve been working really hard at the end of 2015 and come out strong in 2016.”
Also in the quad event, second seed Jamie Burdekin (GBR) evened up the Great Britain-Australia leger by defeating Aussie hope Heath Davidson 6-4 6-3. Burdekin and Alcott, the top two seeds in the event, will square off in the quad decider on Sunday afternoon.
In the men’s wheelchair semifinals third seed Michael Jeremiasz (FRA) knocked out Australian second seed Adam Kellerman 6-3 6-4, while fourth seed Takuya Miki (JPN) downed countryman Takashi Sanada 7-6 2-6 6-3.
In women’s semifinals action defending champion and third seed Kgothatso Montjane (RSA) was ousted from the draw by top seed Sabine Ellerbrock (GER) 6-1 6-2. In her last two matches Ellerbrock has conceded just three games, and will start Sunday’s final as the hot favourite for the title.
Zhenzhen Zhu (CHN) defeated a second top 10 ranked player in as many days, sending fourth seed Diede De Groot (NED) packing with a 6-1 7-5 victory.
Twenty-six-year-old Zhu will enter the final on an eight-match winning streak.
In the men’s doubles, Aussie pair Ben Weekes and Adam Kellerman lost to the second seed pairing of Takuya Miki and Michael Jeremiasz 7-6 6-3, while top seeded Great Britain duo Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid took just 45 minutes to deliver a 6-0 6-0 victory over Evans Maripa (RSA) and Takashi Sanada.
Meanwhile in the women’s doubles draw, Kgothatso Montjane and Lucy Shuker (GBR) were set a tough challenge by France’s Charlotte Famin and Emmanuelle Morch but it was the top seeds who eventually prevailed, winning 6-3 3-6 [10-3].
The second seed pair of Diede De Groot and Sabine Ellerbrock eased to a 6-2 6-2 win over fourth seeds Louise Hunt (GBR) and Katharina Kruger (GER).
Quad and wheelchair finals action commences at 4pm on Sunday 10 January at Queensland Tennis Centre.
