Top seed Gavin van Peperzeel and Maverick Banes [3] have both advanced to the quarterfinals at the Mornington Peninsula Men’s International #1. Both boys had comfortable wins, with their second round matches against qualifiers. Banes defeated Cody Brackenreg (AUS) 6-2 6-3 while van Peperzeel defeated Ivan Goluza 4-6 6-2 6-0.
Meanwhile wild card entrants at the Canberra Clay Court International #1, Olivia Tjandramulia and Naiktha Bains have both advanced through to the quarterfinals winning all their matches so far in straight sets and sending seeds tumbling.
Tjandramulia was up against world number 166 and top seed Miyu Kato (JPN). It was the Australian, however who dominated the match, taking the first set 6-2. Kato broke early in the second set to go up 2-1, but it would be the last game she won as Tjandramulia went onto win the next 5 games and move into the quarterfinals.
Bains, who received a wildcard into the tournament, was up against German qualifier Vivian Heisen. Bains looked in trouble early as she went down 3-0, but she fought back to rattle off the next six games and take the first set. Things remained on serve early in the second, until Bains secured the break at 3-2. She closed out the match 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal clash with Aiava.
The two teenagers are also proving to be a successful doubles partnership with the duo advancing to the semifinals in doubles draw after a win over Katy Dunne (GBR) and Barbora Stefkova (CZE).
Three-time Grand Slam doubles finalist Ashleigh Barty (QLD) and her partner Arina Rodionova won their all-Aussie doubles affair over Alison Bai and Ya-Hsuan Lee.
