Australia’s Olympic tennis singles campaign has ended with Sam Stosur losing in straight sets to world No.2 German Angelique Kerber.

The last Australian singles player in the either draw, Stosur’s run was stopped in the third round by the reigning Australian Open champion 6-0 7-5.

Yet Stosur is not done in Rio – she will partner John Peers against fourth-seeded Indian combination Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna in the opening round of the mixed doubles.

Stosur looked headed for a rapid defeat; after failing to win a game in the opening set she was broken in the fifth game of the second, eventually trailing 6-0 5-3.

Yet after holding serve to remain in the match, Stosur staved off a match point and broke Kerber after a mammoth game featuring five deuces.

Kerber steadied after that disappointment, responding to break Stosur in the very next game before serving out the match on her second attempt.

She’ll face Brit Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals.
