Kelvin Grove State College has played well above its ranking, losing just one round-robin tie to the eventual winners, to take home Bronze from the National Schools Challenge in Albury.
It’s one of the most impressive results ever achieved by a Queensland team at the event.
Here’s a run down of how the girls performed by the school’s Tennis Excellence Co-ordinator, Rob Amos.
“Going in to the tournament as the sixth ranked team the girls finished second in their pool only losing to the very strong and eventual winners Meridan girls school from Sydney . In the cross over semi-final match Kelvin Grove played the undefeated Applecross High school from Perth and were very close to causing an upset only to go down three rubbers all but losing on sets differential. This placed the girls in a playoff for third and fourth against the girls from Maribyrnong College. Once again this was a tense and hard fought match . Many lessons were learned from the previous day and this time Kelvin Grove prevailed three rubbers all , seven sets to six .
The team of Naomi McKenzie, Nina Hess, Megan Smith, Elodie Foster, Mali Vili and Jessica Haylo can all be very proud of their efforts especially considering they will be eligible for this tournament for the next two years .
Coach Jesse Catterall and Chaperone Natalie Foster were instrumental in helping the girls perform at such a high standard during the tournament.”
Great work Kelvin Grove!
