It was a mixed bag of results for Queensland players at the 2017 French Open.
Most notable in their success was Ash Barty, who together with Casey Dellacqua, made the championship doubles final. The Aussie pairing have now made the final of all four Grand Slams – the first female Australian team to do so in 50 years.
Sam Stosur made R4 in singles, before going down to eventual winner Jelena Ostapenko 2-6 6-2 6-4. Stosur later admitting she was playing through a wrist injury.
Meanwhile, in the French Open Junior boy’s championship, 18 year old Blake Ellis from Brisbane made the quarterfinals. Ellis eliminated Hungarian fourth seed Zsombor Piros, the Australian Open 2017 champion, 3-6 6-1 6-2 in the third round before going down to the 11th seed and eventual finalist Nicola Kuhn in straight sets 6-0 6-3.
It was a forgettable tournament for Queensland’s Bernard Tomic, who lost in straight sets in R1 to Austrian Dominic Thiem. Also failing to break through the first round was John Millman, who returned from a groin injury to play with a protected ranking, going down in four sets to Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 6-2 0-6 6-1.
