Grand slam winner and tennis legend Mal Anderson has been honoured by Brisbane City Council through the unveiling of a park bench and plaque, erected in his name.

Anderson, now 82, won the US Open in 1957, the same year he reached a career high ranking of world No.2.

He was humbled by the gesture, saying still being recognised is not something he’s come to expect.

“I’ve enjoyed greatly doing what I’ve done, and today is a great honour, I appreciate it very much, it’s something I don’t feel I deserve,” said Anderson at the unveiling ceremony.

The official ceremony was conducted by Councillor Amanda Cooper in Ashgrove, and was a small gesture of appreciation to the player who has created a lasting legacy in the sport of tennis.

Anderson took the chance to reflect on the younger generation of players, and the importance of leadership and integrity.

“These days they’ve got a tremendous opportunity of succeeding and making a very good living, and we need people to really put back in and set an example for the younger ones.”

Anderson is well-known for his contribution to coaching and developing young players in Brisbane.
