Mitchell James (Qld) and Kelly Wren (NSW) are the Special Olympics Australia National Games division one gold medallists after taking out the titles in West Lakes.

The Special Olympics Australia National Games were held in Adelaide from 16-20 April, with 49 competitors from around Australia taking part in the tennis component held over three days.

Held every four years, the Special Olympics Australia National Games give players with an intellectual disability the opportunity to compete and demonstrate their skills and sportsmanship on a national level.

Andriana Petrakis (Allenby Gardens, SA) and Peter Kerin (Greenwith, SA) represented Team South Australia, with both players finishing a commendable fourth in their respective divisions.

“West Lakes Tennis Club is thrilled to have hosted the tennis component of the Special Olympics Australia National Games,” said West Lakes Tennis Club President Col Lawson.

“Hosting the athletes and their support staff has been a truly rewarding experience that our club members and volunteers will remember for quite some time.

“The smiles on the faces of the athletes say it all and we couldn’t be more proud to have been involved in this wonderful event.”

“Tennis SA was delighted to have been a part of the Special Olympics Australia National Games,” said Tennis SA CEO Steven Baldas.

“The National Games provide opportunities for athletes with an intellectual disability in an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and fun.”
