Outstanding members of Queensland’s Tennis community in 2018 have been honoured at the gala Tennis Queensland Awards evening at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition centre.

Hosted by 22 Grand Slam doubles Champion, Todd Woodbridge, the Awards recognised the entire Queensland tennis community who continue to grow the sport to new levels in the sunshine state.

Ipswich’s Ashleigh Barty was named the Ashley Cooper Medal for the Athlete of the Year, adding to an already incredible year.

  • First Grand Slam doubles title at the 2018 US Open with partner Coco Vandeweghe
  • Reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam in singles for the first time (US Open 2018)
  • Received the US Open Series 2018 Sportsmanship Award
  • ,Won her second WTA singles title (Nottingham)
  • Reached a career high singles world ranking of No. 16.

Barty accepted the Award via video from the WTA Finals in Singapore .

“I am very humbled to win the Ashley Cooper Medal for the second year running. It has been a phenomenal year for me, probably my best year on Tour and its really exciting to have these last two weeks in Singapore and Zhuhai to finish off my year strongly. Thank you again.” Barty said.

The Wendy Turnbull Medal for Junior Athletes of the Year went to Chen Dong and Olivia Gadecki.

The prestigious Club of the Year trophy was awarded to Mooloolaba Tennis Club.

Tennis Queensland’s Chief Executive, Mark Handley congratulated all winners and finalists at the 2018 Tennis Queensland Awards.

“I want to acknowledge every finalist and winner who were part of Tennis Queensland’s most glamorous night of the year. It has been a fantastic 12 months for Queensland Tennis. Participation levels continue to grow across the state, support from all levels of government is at its strongest and our clubs are thriving under the stewardship of passionate administrators, volunteers, coaches and players,” Mr Handley said.

“We have also seen incredible results from our professional players at Grand Slams and on the ATP, WTA and ITF tours. The success of players and true role models like Ash Barty, John Millman, Samantha Stosur, Jason Kubler,  Priscilla Hon and Lizette Cabrera has a direct result on membership numbers and generates year round excitement about tennis in Queensland. ”
